The finish detail at the fixture

A ceiling medallion is the moulded surround that sits where a light fixture meets the ceiling. It hides the mounting plate and the patch around it, and it gives a pendant or chandelier something to sit against instead of floating on bare plaster.

Ours are high-density polyurethane, moulded to hold crisp detail, and light enough to handle as a decorative component rather than a plaster casting.

Where medallions are used

  • Under a chandelier or pendant in an entry, dining room or stairwell
  • At the center panel of a coffered ceiling, where the grid already frames the fixture
  • On a ceiling fan mount, where the plate is wide and unattractive
  • In commercial interiors — see commercial ceilings and interiors

Sizing a medallion

The two things that decide size are the fixture and the room, not the ceiling alone. A medallion that is too small reads as a washer around the fixture; too large and it competes with it. As a starting point the medallion should relate to the widest part of the fixture and to the size of the wall or table it hangs over.

Send the fixture width, the ceiling height and a photo of the room and we will recommend a size rather than have you guess from a chart.

Finishes

Medallions can be painted to disappear into the ceiling, picked out in a contrasting color, or finished to read as timber alongside decorative beams. Where it has to match existing beams or trim, we color match to a sample — see color matching and stain services.

Installation

We install medallions as part of ceiling work across the regions we serve, and we supply them for electricians and contractors to fit. Installation is coordinated with whoever is hanging the fixture, because the medallion goes on before the fixture is finally set. See decorative ceiling medallion installation and medallion installation in Phoenix.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ceiling medallion?

A moulded decorative surround fitted where a light fixture meets the ceiling. It conceals the mounting plate and the ceiling patch around it, and gives the fixture a finished setting.

What size medallion do I need?

It follows the fixture and the room rather than the ceiling alone — it should relate to the widest part of the fixture and to what it hangs over. Send the fixture width, ceiling height and a photo and we will recommend a size.

What are your medallions made from?

High-density polyurethane. It holds moulded detail crisply and is handled as a decorative component rather than a plaster casting.

Can a medallion be used with a ceiling fan?

Yes, and it is a common use, because fan mounting plates are wide. Coordinate the fit with whoever is installing the fan.

Can medallions be painted or stained?

Yes. They can be painted to match the ceiling, contrasted deliberately, or finished to read as timber next to decorative beams.

Do you install medallions, or only supply them?

Both. We install as part of ceiling work in the regions we serve, and supply for electricians and contractors to fit.
