What is a coffered ceiling?
A coffered ceiling is a ceiling divided into a repeating grid of recessed panels, framed by beams that cross the room in both directions. The grid adds depth and shadow to a flat ceiling, and it is one of the oldest ways of giving a large room a sense of proportion.
Traditionally the grid was built from solid timber, which is heavy, slow to install and expensive to finish. We build coffered ceilings from high-density polyurethane components moulded from real wood, so the grid is assembled and finished as a decorative system rather than framed as structural carpentry. Where coffered ceilings work best
Coffered grids suit rooms with enough ceiling area for the pattern to read: great rooms, dining rooms, libraries and studies, primary bedrooms, and entry spaces with a raised ceiling. In commercial work they appear in lobbies, private dining rooms, boardrooms and hospitality suites.
Ceiling height matters more than floor area. On a lower ceiling a shallow grid with slimmer members keeps the pattern without closing the room in; on a high or vaulted ceiling a deeper grid holds the space better. We size the grid to the room during design rather than working to a fixed catalogue layout.
Coffered ceiling styles
- Traditional square grid — even squares with moulded edges, the most familiar coffered look.
- Rectangular or plank grid — longer panels that pull the eye along a room.
- Craftsman — flatter, wider members with simple edges and a matte, close-grain finish.
- Contemporary — minimal profiles, wide panels, painted or low-sheen finishes.
- Beamed grid — heavier timber-look members where the beams themselves are the feature. This is the closest to our decorative beam work.

Lighting, medallions and integration
The grid decides where light can go, so lighting is a design-stage decision rather than an afterthought. Recessed fittings sit inside the panels, pendants and chandeliers hang from panel centers, and perimeter coves can wash the beams. Where a fixture lands at a panel center, a ceiling medallion finishes the junction.
Tell us the fixture positions and any HVAC, sprinkler or speaker locations while the grid is being laid out, and the panel spacing can be set around them instead of cut to fit afterwards.
