Installation Overview
Below is a simplified look at the installation process. Always reference the official guide for diagrams and full details.
1. Measure Carefully
Measure the inside width of the beam and cut wood blocking to match those dimensions.
If installing multiple beams, determine spacing before proceeding.
2. Mark Layout Lines
Once placement is confirmed, mark the center points along both sides of the ceiling or wall and connect them with a chalk line.
Accurate layout is what creates that professional, symmetrical look.
3. Install Wood Blocking
Attach blocking starting about 2 feet from the wall, then continue every 3–6 feet for proper support.
If studs or joists don’t align with the blocking, toggle bolts or molly bolts are recommended for secure attachment.
4. Dry Fit the Beam
Measure each opening individually to account for minor structural variances. Cutting the beam slightly long allows for a tighter final fit.
Make adjustments as needed before fastening.
5. Secure the Beam
Fasten the beam to the blocking using finishing nails or screws. Screws should be countersunk, then covered with wood filler and painted for a finished appearance.
6. Finish the Edges
Apply caulk where the beam meets the wall or ceiling if needed to create a seamless transition.
Professional Finish: Touch-Up Guidance
Installation typically requires small fasteners, and proper touch-up ensures those areas disappear into the beam’s texture.
- Use color-matched textured caulking to fill nail holes, joints, or gaps.
- Apply conservatively to avoid creating unnecessary repair areas.
- Blend touch-up paint using light layers and feather the color into the surrounding finish for a natural look.
Multiple thin coats usually produce the best results.
