Polyurethane, plaster or wood ceiling medallions?
A medallion is a small piece with a big effect on how a fixture sits. The material mostly affects weight, installation and how it can be finished.
For most homes, polyurethane is the practical choice: it holds crisp detail, is light and can be painted or finished to match. Plaster suits period restoration. Carved wood suits rooms where the wood is meant to show.
How they compare
| Option | Polyurethane | Plaster | Carved wood |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detail | Crisp molded detail | Fine, traditional detail | Hand-carved character |
| Weight | Light | Heavy | Moderate |
| Installation | Handled as a decorative component | Often needs a specialist | Needs secure fixing |
| Finish | Paint or wood-look finish | Paint | Stain or paint |
| Good for | Most homes and commercial rooms | Period restoration | Wood-rich traditional rooms |
Size and finish, in order
Start with the fixture
Relate the medallion to the widest part of the fixture. Too small looks like a washer, and too large competes with it.
Check the room
Consider the ceiling height and what the fixture hangs over, such as a table or an entry.
Pick the finish
Paint it to disappear into the ceiling, pick it out in a contrast color, or finish it to read as timber with your beams.
Plan the junction
On a coffered ceiling, the medallion goes at a panel center. Decide this with the grid and lighting.

Common questions
What size ceiling medallion do I need?
Size it to the fixture and room, not the ceiling alone. Send us the fixture width, ceiling height and a photo, and we will recommend a size.
Can medallions go on a ceiling fan?
Yes. They work well on a fan mount, where the plate is wide and unattractive.
Can you match a medallion to my beams?
Yes. We color match to a sample, so it can be finished to read as timber alongside decorative beams.
Send a photo and the room size. We will take it from there.
Room dimensions, ceiling height, a photo of the space as it is now, and whether you want it installed or supplied. That is enough to scope it and come back with a rough estimate — free.
