Coffered ceilings

Coffered ceiling materials: polyurethane, wood or drywall

The grid can look similar in all three, but the material changes the weight, the work on site and how the finish behaves.

The short answer

Polyurethane suits a wood-look grid on an existing ceiling, since it is light and molded from real wood. Solid wood suits projects where the material itself is the point. Drywall or painted MDF suits a painted grid, usually best planned during a larger remodel.

Questions that decide it

Do you want to see wood grain? If not, a painted grid in any material can look right, so compare site disruption and cost. If you do, it is polyurethane or real wood.

What is the ceiling like now? Lightness matters most when you are adding a grid to a finished ceiling. Solid wood needs its support planned.

What is the ceiling height? It matters more than floor area. A lower ceiling needs a shallow grid with slimmer members. A high or vaulted ceiling can hold a deeper one. See our coffered ceiling page.

What is the budget lever? Coffered work is priced by the grid, not the floor. Fewer, larger panels is the main way to bring a design down. See coffered ceiling cost.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a foam coffered ceiling convincing up close?

Our components are molded from real wood and hand finished. Ask for a physical sample and judge it in your own light.

Can a coffered ceiling go on an existing ceiling?

Yes. Polyurethane components are assembled as a decorative system rather than framed as structural carpentry.

Which material should I use for a painted grid?

Any of the three can work. The decision comes down to site disruption, the condition of the ceiling and whether other trades are already working there.
