Adding ceiling beams to a new build or a remodel
Decorative beams can go in late, which is one of their advantages. The decisions behind them, including layout, lighting and finish, go better when made early.
On a new build, settle the layout before lighting and services are roughed in, then install near the end of finishing. On a remodel, beams can usually go on the existing ceiling, so check the framing, what is above and what you will reuse.

What changes between the two
| Option | New build | Remodel or retrofit |
|---|---|---|
| Best time to decide | During design, before rough-in | Before ordering, once the ceiling is assessed |
| Blocking | Can be planned before the ceiling closes | Fixed through the finished ceiling into framing |
| Lighting | Plan fixtures and wiring around the grid | Work with existing positions, or move them |
| Main risk | Trades conflict if the layout comes late | Hidden conditions and out-of-level ceilings |
| Finish matching | Match to selected flooring and cabinets | Match to what is already there |
A sequence that works
Lead times run before freight, so count back from your install date.
Agree the layout
Mark up the plans with lighting, HVAC, sprinklers and speakers.
Approve the finish
Sign off a physical sample against your flooring, cabinetry or trim.
Order
Standard profiles take about 4 to 6 weeks, the economy line 6 to 8, and premium custom work 8 to 10.
Prepare and install
Have blocking and electrical ready. Let beams acclimate to the room for at least 24 hours.
Touch up
Treat the joints and ends last, once the other trades are finished.

Common questions
Can beams go on a finished ceiling?
Yes. They mount over blocking fixed into the framing, so there is no need to open up the ceiling in most cases.
When should a builder contact you?
As early as the layout is being drawn. Layout decisions are cheapest before lighting and services are roughed in.
Do decorative beams need structural engineering?
Decorative polyurethane beams do not carry load. If you are removing or changing a structural member, you need a qualified professional for that part.
Send a photo and the room size. We will take it from there.
Room dimensions, ceiling height, a photo of the space as it is now, and whether you want it installed or supplied. That is enough to scope it and come back with a rough estimate — free.
